On this episode of the Carlsbad People, Purpose, and Impact Podcast, Bret Schanzenbach talks with American Cancer Society Relay for Life Carlsbad-Encinitas Event Coordinator, Carly Lackey. Over the past ten years, Carly has gone from helping provide entertainment for the event to being the go-to volunteer coordinator for the annual Relay for Life, an all-day event where teams walk laps and raise money for cancer research.

Carly became involved with the ACS’s Relay for Life when her friends, David and Jodie, first brought the Relay for Life event to Carlsbad. They knew she loved music, so they asked her to sing and play guitar at the event. A few years later, Carly’s mom was diagnosed with cancer, which led Carly to become more heavily involved in the Relay for Life. From there, her role expanded into a leadership position and she now volunteers as the Event Coordinator for the Relay for Life Carlsbad-Encinitas. In this conversation, Carly shares how she became involved in the Relay for Life, her personal journey with cancer, ways the community can support those who have cancer, and information about the upcoming Relay for Life Carlsbad-Encinitas, which will be held on June 18.
