Steve, Aptera is one of the most innovative companies in North County, and I'm excited to talk about your journey, the technology behind Aptera, and what it means for our local economy and the future of transportation.




Steve's Journey
Steve shared how his professional path began in the U.S. Army, where he served as a calibration specialist before using the GI Bill to attend the University of Utah.
Starting with remedial math courses, he ultimately earned a degree in electrical engineering and became a tutor in advanced mathematics. He credits his education and military background with teaching him the value of discipline, continuous learning, and problem-solving.
Following graduation, Steve joined Illumina, where he worked on advanced biotechnology systems, including automated DNA synthesis technologies. While successful, he eventually sought a larger challenge and began exploring highly efficient electric vehicle design as a personal project.




The Origin of Aptera
What began as a garage project evolved into the original Aptera venture in 2006.
Steve explained that after researching electric vehicles, he became frustrated by limited driving range and poor efficiency.
By studying vehicle aerodynamics and weight reduction, he concluded that an entirely new approach was needed.
Rather than converting existing vehicle designs to electric power, Aptera was built from the ground up around efficiency.
