Introduction
Bret Schanzenbach: Welcome to Carlsbad People, Purpose & Impact, the podcast highlighting the leaders, businesses, and organizations shaping our community.
Today I'm joined by Justin Peek, Founder and CEO of Peak Wealth.
Justin, welcome back.
Justin Peek: Thank you, Bret. It's great to be here.
Justin's Journey
Justin shares his unique path from Toronto to England and eventually Southern California. Raised by entrepreneurial parents, he witnessed firsthand the realities of starting and operating businesses.
Although he studied English at the University of San Diego, with minors in business and French, entrepreneurship remained a constant influence.
Following graduation, Justin joined Enterprise Rent-A-Car's highly regarded management training program, where he learned every aspect of running a business—from operations and marketing to financial management and leadership.
Those experiences would ultimately prepare him for a career helping individuals and business owners manage their own financial futures.
Building Peak Wealth
After nearly two decades with Edward Jones, Justin made the decision to launch Peak Wealth.
He explains that the move was driven by a desire to create a more customized, fiduciary-focused planning environment that would allow greater flexibility, innovation, and personalization for clients.
Rather than focusing solely on investments, Peak Wealth was designed to integrate every aspect of a client's financial life into a cohesive strategy.
What Does an "Ideal Life" Mean?
For Justin, financial planning starts with one question:
What does your ideal life look like?
Rather than beginning with retirement accounts, investment products, or financial targets, he encourages clients to define the lifestyle, relationships, and experiences they want first.
From there, financial strategies can be built to support those goals.
Justin describes financial planning as lifestyle planning—helping individuals create alignment between their financial resources and the life they truly want to live.
Financial Independence and Long-Term Planning
One of the most common questions Justin encounters is:
"How much money do I actually need?"
He explains that many people spend decades working toward financial goals without ever calculating what financial independence truly means for them.
Every family has unique objectives, expenses, risks, and priorities.
Successful planning requires a customized roadmap rather than generic formulas and internet advice.
Technology, AI, and the Future of Financial Advice
The conversation explores the rise of artificial intelligence and its impact on financial services.
Justin believes technology will dramatically improve the efficiency and accuracy of financial planning.
However, he argues that trust, empathy, judgment, and life coaching remain deeply human functions.
Rather than replacing advisors, AI will allow professionals to spend more time focused on meaningful client conversations and personalized guidance.
Wealth, Legacy, and Generational Success
Justin discusses one of the most challenging aspects of wealth management: preserving wealth across generations.
He explains that technical financial strategies are only part of the equation.
Long-term success requires:
• Clear family communication
• Shared values
• Financial education
• Intentional stewardship
According to Justin, significance—not simply wealth accumulation—is often the differentiator between families that preserve their legacy and those that lose it.
Community Leadership and Giving Back
As a longtime supporter of local nonprofits and a leader within the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, Justin believes successful individuals and businesses should invest in the communities that support them.
He encourages listeners to get involved through volunteering, charitable giving, or joining local organizations that strengthen education, healthcare, arts, and community services.
His message is simple:
Leave the community better than you found it.
Closing Thoughts
Justin closes the conversation by encouraging listeners to spend time defining what success, fulfillment, and significance truly mean to them.
When financial planning is connected to purpose and values, money becomes a tool for building a meaningful life—not simply an end goal.
